Considered by Turks to be the 8th wonder of the world, Pamukkale, which means “white castle”, looks like a snowy, icy series of waterfalls. We I first realized that our climb would be up a shallow stream, I thought we were going to have to turn back. I reckoned it was a summer attraction, warm weather allowing visitors to hike shoe-less up the chilly water.
Bu the calcium deposits, which look just like snow from a short distance, fool you. The water flows from a hot spring, and is pleasantly warm to hike through even when the temperature is in the low 50s.
And if strange, white hot springs wasn’t already and attraction, there’s the ruins of a Roman/pre-Roman city at the top of the hill. It’s called Hierapolis .
